    Description

For your  consideration and enjoyment: Authentic U.S Navy mark 17 porthole in solid brass with one inch thick window glass from World War II.
This porthole is from the estate of an acquaintance, a career U.S Naval Commander-Sixth Fleet. The overall dimensions are 15" in diameter, the glass being 10" in diameter and 1 inch thick. There are two turn buckle lock downs 9" apart and a third with no locking method that was for a storm cover. There is a brass ring on the window edge to allow the window to propped open with a rope or chain. The hinge at the bottom is 4" long and 1" in diameter without the holding lugs and is stamped in two places "Mark 17". There are 11 bolt holes for securing. This porthole weighs right at 35lbs 8oz.
When I acquired this lovely piece the glass was blacked out with tar which was about 1/4" thick in places. I have removed the tar and most of the red oxide sealer there are a couple of chipped spots with tar still caught in them. There is still some minor sea foam green paint and sealer residue which I have left on. The brass has a very nice patina.
