    Description

For sale is a 1993 Legends of the West stamp panel with twenty 29 cent stamps. This the recalled panel with the incorrect picture of Bill Pickett.
In 1993, the USPS released a series of Legends of the West stamps, including a 29 cent stamp to honor Bill Pickett, the African-American cowboy credited with inventing steer wrestling. After the sheets were produced, the Pickett family said the man pictured on the stamp was actually Bill's brother, Ben Pickett.
The postal service planned to recall and destroy millions of stamp panels with the incorrect image, and all but 183 sheets could be recalled. To help defray printing costs, the Postal Service decided to sell 150,00 of the faulty panels through a lottery system. The rest of the sheets were destroyed.
