Ride the Wild Surf is a 1964
American romantic drama film in the beach party style. It was filmed in 1963 and distributed in 1964. Unlike most films in the genre, it is known for its exceptional big wave surf footage – a common sight in surf movies of the time, but a rarity in beach party films.  Likewise, the film has only one pop song – the titular Jan and Dean track, which is heard once, at the end of the film.
Film critic Tom Lisanti wrote; "the movie stands head and shoulders above all the sixties beach party movies... It makes an honorable attempt to portray surfers and the sport of surfing sincerely and to showcase the big waves of the north shore of Hawaii. There are no singing surfers or goofy motorcycle gang members... [It is] the best 'Hollywood' surf movie of the sixties."
The film was written by Jo and Art Napoleon. From late 1963 to early 1964, they traveled with cinematographer Joseph Biroc to Hawaii to shoot surf footage of surfers. They filmed at Haleiwa, Sunset Beach, Pipeline and Waimea Bay.
    The surfers included Miki Dora
(who doubled for Fabian's character, Jody),
Greg Noll and Butch Van Artsdalen
performed a large part of the surfing seen in the film.
Phil Edwards, Rusty Miller, and Mike Hynson
    as well.
The studio's version of the story was that Greg Noll's surfing was so impressive that the Napoleons created the character Eskimo based on footage featuring him.  —
Greg's story is a little different. (As told in; his autobiography, "Da Bull- Life on the Edge"); After surfing Waimea all day, Greg paddled in and was walking on the sand carrying his board, when "some guy with clipboard" came up to him and told him he wouldn't be able to surf for a few days because they were filming "stunt" surfers, wearing specific trunks and he was interfering with the filming.  Noll told 'em to "take a flying F^*#. "The next morning they came up to me with a contract to be in the movie — It was good money - 'Hell Yeah!'
    I said '
', signed it and paddled out".
    The
    Napoleons
then returned to Hollywood to write the script. They pitched the project to Columbia who agreed to finance the project.
While the other surfers had specific trunks that the actors would also wear, the Napoleons created the character "Eskimo" and had him wear duplicates of
    Greg Noll
’s famous black & white "jailhouse stripe" boardshorts.
Hunter and Brown dyed their hair to match the "stunt" surfers. "A rare case of the stars doubling for the stunt men," wrote Hunter later.
Unlike most of the Hollywood beach movies – whose location was Southern California – Ride the Wild Surf was filmed in Hawaii at a time when environmental conditions created exceptionally large waves a.k.a. Big Winter Swell. In November and December 1962, Waimea broke big often. The jet stream had altered its course temporarily and huge West swell surf became common all the way through the following February, which was when Columbia arrived to shoot the movie.
Footage of Tab Hunter, Peter Brown and Fabian on surfboards was shot on the Columbia backlot, using back projection. "It's amazing to think anyone was taken in by this pasted-together version of surfer culture," said Hunter.  (Don't worry Tab, nobody was).

    Very Good to Fine
    .
Overall, the poster was in very good to fine condition prior to linenbacking.
The poster had the most minor of wear on the fold lines and very minor border defects. There was a tiny area of paper loss in the middle left of the top fold line (in surfer's calf).  The restorer touched-up the tiny quarter-inch area of paper loss and is only
    noticeable with a magnifying glass.
    The poster was well backed.
I've owned a few examples of this poster, this is the finest example I've ever seen.
