Thickness varies a bit - so state thick, medium, or thin, if you have a preference
)
I purchased some of this material as surplus from an aerospace company in San Diego in 1982.
It was discolored on the outside surfaces and very dusty, so it was probably made in the 1960's or 1970's, possibly earlier.
It's very beautiful when sanded or polished to bring out the fiddleback or grain structure... and it's amazingly tough stuff!! The first 9 photos show a random piece after sanding and clear lacquer coating. The 10th photo shows an aged surface lightly sanded without clear coat. And the last 2 photos show the saw-cut material. You will receive a saw-cut piece. All pieces are cut from the same block - what it looks like after sanding, staining and finishing will vary.
Micarta
is a brand name owned by NorPlex Inc., originally established by Westinghouse, for composite fabrics cured together with thermosetting phenolic plastic resins.
The original was developed by George Westinghouse for use in electrical and decorative applications.
Resins were used to impregnate fabrics of linen, canvas, burlap, paper, fiberglass, cotton and other materials, which were cured under tremendous pressure and high temperature to produce thin to very thick laminates.
Westinghouse, Raytheon, General Electric and other major corporations produced these materials.
